Elodie Gouthey is the practice manager at Your Pet’s Vet, a veterinary clinic located in one of Perth’s bustling inner suburbs. Elodie started her career as a vet nurse at the same clinic, so when she was promoted to Practice Manager, she knew all the ins and outs and exactly what had to change for the clinic to deliver better patient care.
One thing that Elodie wanted to address was the frustrating pathology submission process. It was simply too inefficient, requiring trips back and forth to the printer, constant follow-up with the couriers to come pick up the samples, and deciphering the handwritten forms and stickers on the pathology samples. It all left too much room for error and miscommunication, which put pets at risk.
Even when the pathology lab transitioned to online forms, Elodie felt there had to be a better way:
We still had to fill in all the information [on digital pathology forms]. The only thing that was on it was our clinic's name but we had to write everything else - the patient details, patient number, the history, what sort of test we wanted. So it had to be really accurate. And in the end, it was still time-consuming.
Then Vetnostics, the pathology lab that processed samples for Your Pet’s Vet, integrated with Vedi to deliver digital pathology services that didn’t require any forms.
Elodie was thrilled to discover that Vedi was exactly what she had been looking for.
I wanted a portal, which we get through the Vedi app. So that ticked the box for me. It was a completely paperless process. Also being able to record a history on a pathology form with voice to text instead of having to write it or even just type it during a consult. Those little things are great. And then I met Steve [one of Vedi’s founders] and he talked to me about his vision and why he started Vedi. We’ve been fans since the beginning.
Once Your Pet’s Vet started using Vedi for pathology submissions, Elodie quickly expanded to other modules, seeing the benefit of digitising other clinic workflows, like vaccination and microchip registration. The clinic also receives notifications through Vedi anytime one of their pet patients is checked into an emergency hospital, so they can follow up with the pet parent. In the past 6 months, Your Pet’s Vet has been notified of 190 emergency check-ins, enabling same-day follow-ups
Since clinic workflows done with Vedi are always linked to the pet’s microchip, Elodie knows that her pet patients will always have accurate records her team can unlock with a scan of the pet’s microchip. The pet’s most recent vaccinations, their microchip registration status and pathology history are all recorded on Vedi and synced with the clinic’s practice management system.
In fact, it’s become an integral part of their daily clinic routine: scan the pet’s microchip at the beginning of the consult, then any procedure done through Vedi is automatically added to the pet’s record.
Beyond streamlining workflows, Elodie and her team believe in Vedi’s bigger mission: building a universal medical record that’s always linked to the pet’s microchip to improve veterinary outcomes.
We like the fact that when we scan the microchip, the client sometimes doesn't know why we do that. So we talk to the client about it, that one day everything will be saved on it, and the whole medical history of your pet will be there. They're quite amazed by it. It’s like a little opportunity to educate the customers.
Moments like these allow clinics to give pet owners a glimpse of what truly connected care can look like.
I really believe that this is the future that veterinary medicine is heading towards. Because it’s making everything more interconnected.
